Wood Carvings | Old Soo Line Depot Wood Carving
This depot was built in 1889 out of brown stone quarried in the Apostle Islands which are about 40 miles away. This brown stone was very popular for a short time for public buildings as far away as New York City. The wood beams were made from huge Douglas fir and white pine timbers. The depot is being restored after its second fire which was in 2000.
The wood boxes and pots under the "Wood Burning and Art" section of this site are made out of the beautiful old timbers that were damaged by the 2000 fire.
